Hermes: The Last True Luxury

Hermes: The Last True Luxury

Hermes Logo

What is Hermes?

Hermes is famous for their exquisite and flamboyant handbags, scarves, small leather goods, shoes, perfumes, ready-to-wear, etc. It was established by Thierry Hermes in the year 1837, since then it was passed by generation after generation. Now the CEO of Hermes is Patrick Thomas he is the first non-Hermes to lead the company. The current artistic director of Hermes is Pierre-Alexis Dumas son of Jean-Louis Robert Guillame Frédéric Dumas-Hermès.

Hermes Headquarters in 24, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.

The Designers

Hermes has a very colourful history when it comes to designers. From Lola Prusac to Monsieur Levaillant to Mariot Chane to Martin Margiela to Jean Paul Gaultier to Véronique Nichanian (current menswear designer) and Christophe Lemaire (current womenswear designer).

What makes Hermes the last TRUE luxury?

As of 2008, Hermès has 14 product divisions encompassing leather, scarves, ties, men's wear, women's fashion, perfume, watches, stationery, footwear, gloves, enamel, decorative arts, tableware, and jewelry. We all know that when you hear the word Hermes it will instantly mean top notch, high end, high quality, and the likes. The other thing that makes them the last true luxury is that the Hermes family still owns the company unlike Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent who now owns by LVMH and Kering Group.

The Hermes family is trying to keep the company on their management. At 31 December 2010, the Hermès family collectively owned a 62.79% stake in Hermès International S.A. through a number of individual and company holdings; the stake entitled the family to 73.96% of voting rights in the company. The luxury goods company LVMH held 20.21% of shares (amassed in the latter half of 2010)[14] and 13.08% of votes at the same date, with 0.39% of shares held as treasury stock and the remaining 16.61% free float. Speculation that LVMH will launch a takeover bid for Hermès has been repeatedly denied by its chairman Bernard Arnault. Some industry insiders are in doubt, such as René Weber, an analyst at Zürich's Bank Vontobel, who has claimed: "Arnault is not afraid of a fight and a lot of his battles have been successful for him and his shareholders. Whether he can eventually succeed with [a takeover of] Hermès is still an open question." Bertrand Puech, who chairs the main Hermès family holding company, has criticised LVMH's acquisition of Hermès shares and called on the company to reduce its stake by half.

The other thing that makes Hermes the last true luxuty brand is that they don’t have a lower line. Lower lines are like Marc Jacobs’ Marc by Marc Jacobs, Burberry’s Burberry Brit and London, Roberto Cavalli’s Just Cavalli, and Armani’s Armani Exchange, Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans and Armani Collezioni, and many more.

And the last thing why Hermes is the last true luxury brand is that they never reduce they’re prices. Even though Hermes is having an annual private sale in Paris, but still they don’t have sales in public. When a certain design is still not selling to the clients at the private sale, they will destroy it than putting it on outlets like many luxury brands do. Because they believe having an outlet will degrade they’re name. Hermes is now one of the most valuable luxury brands around the world.

Gucci operates about 278 directly operated stores worldwide (as of September 2009) and it wholesales its products through franchisees and upscale department stores. With beginnings at the end of the 19th century, the Gucci company became one of the world’s most successful manufacturers of high-end leather goods, clothing, and other fashion products. As an immigrant in Paris and then London, working in exclusive hotels, young Guccio Gucci (1881–1953) was impressed with the luxurious luggage he saw urbane guests bring with them. before leaving he visited the manufacturer H.J. Cave & Sons. Upon returning to his birthplace of Florence, a city distinguished for high-quality materials and skilled artisans, he established a shop in 1920 that sold fine leather goods with classic styling. Although Gucci organized his workrooms for industrial methods of production, he maintained traditional aspects of fabrication. Initially, Gucci employed skilled workers in basic Florentine leather crafts, attentive to finishing. With expansion, machine stitching was a production method that supported construction. There were seventy-six Gucci stores around the world in 1997, along with numerous licensing agreements. Ford was instrumental in the process of decision-making with De Sole when the Gucci Group acquired Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, Bottega Veneta, Boucheron, Sergio Rossi, and, in part-ownership with Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga. By 2001 Ford and De Sole shared the responsibility for major business decisions, while Ford concurrently directed design at Yves Saint Laurent as well as at Gucci. The French conglomerate Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, however, gained ownership of 60 percent of the Gucci Group’s stock in 2003. Women’s Wear Daily then announced the departure of both Domenico De Sole and Tom Ford from the Gucci Group when their contracts expired in April 2004. The last spring collection under the direction of Ford and De Sole was a critical and commercial success. Amid widespread speculation in the fashion press about Ford’s heir, the company announced in March 2004 that he would be replaced by a team of younger designers promoted from the ranks of the company’s staff. In 2005, Frida Giannini was appointed as the creative director for women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, previously joining Gucci in 2002. In 2006, she also became the creative director for men's ready-to-wear and the entire Gucci label. Brand value: $9.45 billion.

Louis Vuitton flagship Store at Champs-Elysees

Louis Vuitton - a French fashion house founded in 1854 by Louis Vuitton. The label's LV monogram appears on most of its products, ranging from luxury trunks and leather goods to ready-to-wear, shoes, watches, jewelry, accessories, sunglasses, and books. Louis Vuitton is one of the world's leading international fashion houses; it sells its products through standalone boutiques, lease departments in high-end department stores, and through the e-commerce section of its website. For six consecutive years (2006–2012), Louis Vuitton has been named the world's most valuable luxury brand. The Louis Vuitton label was founded by Vuitton in 1854 on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris, France. Louis Vuitton had observed that the HJ Cave Osilite[9] trunk could be easily stacked and in 1858, Vuitton introduced his flat-bottom trunks with trianon canvas, making them lightweight and airtight. Before the introduction of Vuitton's trunks, rounded-top trunks were used, generally to promote water run off, and thus could not be stacked. It was Vuitton's gray Trianon canvas flat trunk that allowed the ability to stack with ease for voyages. Many other luggagemakers imitated LV's style and design. The Louis Vuitton brand and the famous LV monogram are among the world's most valuable brands. According to a Millward Brown 2010 study, Louis Vuitton is the world's 29th most valuable brand, right after Gillette and before Wells Fargo. The brand itself is estimated to be worth over USD $19 billion. For the sixth consecutive year, Louis Vuitton still at number one of ten most powerful brand published by the Millward Brown Optimor's 2011 BrandZ study with value of $24.3 billion. It was more than double value from the second rank. The Louis Vuitton company carefully cultivates a celebrity following and has used famous models, musicians, and actors such as Keith Richards, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Sean Connery, Hayden Christensen, Angelina Jolie, and most recently David Bowie in its marketing campaigns. Breaking from their usual traditions of employing supermodels and celebrities to advertise their products, on 2 August 2007, the company announced that the former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev would appear in an ad campaign along with Steffi Graf, Selena Gomez, and Catherine Deneuve. Many rappers, most notably Kanye West, Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa have mentioned the company in certain songs. The company commonly uses print ads in magazines and billboards in cosmopolitan cities. Louis Vuitton Posters by Razzia were popular in the 1980s. It previously relied on selected press for its advertising campaigns (frequently involving prestigious stars like Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Gisele Bündchen and Catherine Deneuve) shot by Annie Leibovitz. However, Antoine Arnault, director of the communication department, has recently decided to enter the world of television and cinema: The commercial (90 seconds) is exploring the theme "Where will life take you?" and is translated into 13 different languages. This is the first Vuitton commercial ad ever and was directed by renowned French ad director Bruno Aveillan. The Brand Value: $23.58 billion.

Top 10 Brands to look for when your going to shop for your new clothes.

This Top 10 is my personal reference when it comes to the style of their clothes. Also all the brands that are included on the list is not luxury/designer brands it is mixed. Basically these are the shops that i usually buy my clothes.

10. Topman/Topshop - I usually buy my jackets, shorts, and pants here at Topman. Their items are cheap but they look very fashionable. I really love their shorts, they really fit well. Maybe there's an issue for the durability of their products but that's fast fashion is all about quantity over quality. But still i love their products and the designs are cool so i can deal with it.

9. Calvin Klein - Jackets, jeans, and underwear are my favorites from Calvin Klein. I don't know why many people say that Calvin Klein is so expensive. Actually Banana Republic is more expensive than Calvin Klein. And i don't find Calvin Klein as an  ultimate luxury brand like other people say. They are actually CHEAP!

8. Ralph Lauren - For semi-formal occasions Ralph Lauren is my friend. Specially the Purple and Black Label their like the Armani Collezioni and Emporio Armani of Ralph Lauren. I like the designs of the Purple Label it's a classic. I like the modernity of the Black label. I also like Polo by Ralph Lauren line but ut's too common and counterfeited so bad.

7. 7 for all mankind - Jeans. Jeans. Jeans. The fitting of 7 for all mankind for me is perfect, specially the Luxe Performance jeans. My favorite 7 for all mankind jeans is my own white skinny jeans. I can pair it with any clothes. But they are a little bit pricey for a pair of jeans considering it's not designer brand. But the quality and the fitting that matters most.

6. Armani Exchange - For my casual outfits Armani Exchange is always there. I always buy Tees & Hoodies here in Armani Exchange. Armani Exchange is the cheapest line in all Armani line, but still they deliver good quality and designs. I also own clothes from other line like Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, and Armani Collezioni but i really like Armani Exchange for being so casual, but maybe next time smaller logos would be so much better.

5. H&M - The thing that makes H&M unique from the other brands is that they always have a collaboration with a designer brand. I remember buying their H&M x Maison Martin Margiela jeans it looks good the fitting is good. It's one of the biggest retailers around the world and one of the favorites around the world.

4. Burberry - Pea Coats, scarfs and Polo Shirts that's what i dig in Burberry. Burberry  is one of the oldest fashion labels in the world. They've been a force in this industry and stayed strong for the last 2 centuries. Because the designs are iconic, the stitching is perfect. I never had a problem with the quality (Of course that's what i'm paying for). And my experience in Burberry stores are great. The staff of the Burberry stores here in the Philippines are all very accommodating.

3. Massimo Dutti - I love all of their items. It's the classier and a little bit more expensive version of Zara. All of the items looks classy. At first you will think of it as a designer brand but actually it is not. Massimo Dutti is a great substitute for a designer brand if you don't have the budget. And i think this brand is underrated, it needs more recognition. Maybe their expansion in U.S will make them more famous. Massimo Dutti is part of Indetix group the same company as Zara, Pull & Bear, Bershka, and Stardivarius.

2. Paul Smith - Polo Shirts, Shoes, Knitwear everything. I love all the items from Paul Smith. I like the zebra logo on the polo shirts. Polo Shirts fit perfectly i can compare Paul Smith polo shirts to Polo by Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Lacoste, Givenchy, and Lanvin. And it's incredibly cheap for the quality and the design. I think the price of their products should be on the level of Gucci.

2. Ermenegildo Zegna - For formal occasions Ermenegildo Zegna is always there to find my perfect suit. The price is just right for the quality and fitting. The wool source of Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Gucci and many more. Sport Coats of Ermenegildo Zegna are the best, i like their Sunglasses too. Ermenegildo Zegna Suits are all worth it.

1. Zara - My personal favorite and i love all of their products. They have new designs every 2 weeks, they are so innovative even the Fashion Director of Louis Vuitton Daniel Piette as "possibly the most innovative and devastating retailer in the world.". My favorite items from from Zara are jeans, jackets, and their Tees that looked like Givenchy and Valentino.
